THE SATANIC MIND OF MARY SHELLEY

By Barbara Bortone

What about a woman who eloped with her married partner, who refused the upbringing of her father, who lived alone and wrote even if she was a woman, who acted out her reaction against the rules of society?

A romantic writer, an outcast writer, who was not frightened by the world around her, which was all against her and her choices.

It is easy to remain in a situation even if it is against our thoughts, only because of its security; the real strength is in the challenging character of a person.

"The question is: to act or not to act?"

We have to leave, to challenge a situation that does not let us live how we want.

And then… it is "better to reign in hell, than serve in heaven."

In each moment a man can upset his life to begin from the start… and also a woman can do it!

Our Mary teaches us how to win life, even if all conventions try to submit us.

Doctor Frankenstein teaches us how to challenge life and its rules, even if it means to continue living with the fear of the unexpected result.

Milton teaches us, with his Satan, to live the life we want even if it is in hell.

But this is what each person wants, isn’t it?

Who does not want to live life according to their own thoughts and needs?

Instead of Satan there is God, the image of Good. Satan is bad, is the sin, is Evil.

So Frankenstein is evil too, is the part of society that nobody should ever imitate: he overcomes the limit of knowledge to know more, to find out more. The aim is this, the knowledge to realise and do only what a person wants.

Shelley is linked to her affects, but it is stronger the will of expressing herself.

And is it wrong?

The answer is inside ourselves, is the hidden part of our conscious, it is the monster, the double, that is not a negative creature: therefore these hidden wills are not bad… it is society that makes us think that they are bad. To express ourselves we have to be outsiders, especially if we are women: TO BE SOMEBODY, A WOMAN HAS TO BE A FEMININE EXCESS.

And so, why is Satan in hell?

Is hell freedom?
